Brain Damage
Medical studies have shown that lead levels in a child’s blood can negatively affect intelligence, attention span (ADHD), academic performance, and socialization skills.
ADHD and Behavioral Issues
Certain environmental factors, such as lead exposure in childhood, can cause attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some symptoms include lack of concentration, disorganization, impulsivity, outbursts of anger, forgetfulness, restlessness, and anxiety.
Anemia and Fatigue
One of the causes of lead poisoning is anemia in children, as it decreases the ability of red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body. Lead also affects the absorption of calcium, thus weakening the bones and inhibiting proper growth.
Delayed Physical Growth
Lead blocks nutrient absorption, slowing bone development and stunting physical growth in children. It can also affect weight gain, muscle strength, and overall development.
